LIMA, Peru – With all eight Boilermakers that competed winning at least one medal, Purdue swimmers claimed 23 medals over three days of racing for the UniUSA Team at the FISU America Games.
Purdue accounted for eight of the 44 swimmers selected to represent the United States (the most of any university) at the western hemisphere’s edition of the World University Games. The Boilermakers helped the UniUSA Team dominate at the Videna Aquatic Center as the Americans won all but one event over the three days of action.

Maxwell Blume and Lara Phipps led the way as five-time medalists, each winning four golds and one silver. Blume nearly swept the men’s breaststroke events, taking silver behind teammate Carter Freudstein (North Carolina) in Sunday’s 200 final. Blume entered the race with an opportunity to go 5-for-5 in golds after also contributing to the UniUSA Team’s sweep of the medley relays.
Phipps helped the U.S. win three relays and claimed her individual gold with a victory in the 50-meter butterfly Sunday evening.
Campbell Scofield (100m & 200m fly), Biko Hooper-Haviland (200m fly), Evan Mackesy (200m IM) and Blake Rowe (200m back) also won gold in an individual event.
Blume (50m breast), Scofield (100m fly) and Phipps’ 4x100 medley relay team all set meet records in their victories. Blume and teammate Andrew Lakin (Oakland) shared the record and the gold in the 50 breast.
Hooper-Haviland and Mackey finished 1-2 in the 200 fly. Scofield and Phipps teamed up for a sweep of the women’s butterfly events.
