WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Avery Moore enjoyed a Senior Day for the ages with a 4-for-4, four-RBI game at the plate and Brandon Rogers continued to torment the Hoosiers with another clutch hit as Purdue Baseball defeated Indiana 11-8 Sunday to complete a three-game series sweep at Alexander Field.

The Boilermakers (35-15, 18-9 Big Ten) raced out to an early 5-0 lead but needed another comeback to complete the sweep, overcoming a short-lived 7-6 deficit by outscoring the visitors 5-1 after IU’s five-run sixth inning. It was Purdue’s 20th win this season – and third of the weekend – when trailing at some point in the game.

By sweeping their season-long seven-game homestand, the Boilermakers are riding their longest win streak of the campaign and closed out their home schedule with 20 victories at Alexander. It marks just the second time in team history Purdue has won 20 home games, joining the 1982 team (22-5).

BOILERMAKERS SWEEP THE HOMESTAND
• 3rd straight series sweep at home
• 5th series sweep of the season
• 5th straight series win at home
• 7th straight Big Ten win at home
• 7th straight win on a 7-0 homestand
• 11th winning weekend of the season
• 20th home win
• 35th overall win
• Boilermakers sweep IU for the first time since 2011

Rogers’ two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth allowed the Boilermakers to regain the lead. It was another clutch hit to the opposite field after he ended Saturday’s win with a walk-off, three-run double down the right field line. The senior drove in seven runs in the series, all with two outs and all in the sixth inning or later. His pinch-hit, two-run single in the eighth inning of Friday’s win tied the score at 9-9.

Moore channeled the spirit of the late Moses Malone with a Fo’, Fo’, Fo’ game that will live in Alexander Field lore. As the cleanup hitter batting in the 4-hole, Moore connected for four extra-base hits, drove in four runs and scored four times. He homered twice and doubled twice before being hit by a pitch in his final plate appearance. Moore’s 12 total bases are tied for fourth most in program history and are the most by a Boilermaker since Logan Sutter tied the program record with 14 as part of his 6-for-6 game in a win vs. Niagara in Holly Springs, N.C., in February of last season.

Moore joined Aaron Manias and Rogers as Boilermakers with a multi-homer game this season, all coming in home wins at Alexander. He joined also Eli Anderson, Westin Boyle and Sam Flores as Boilermakers with a four-hit game this season.

Purdue’s current operations lead and catchers coach Zac Fascia enjoyed a similar 4-for-4 game at Alexander nearly seven years ago to the day. Also batting cleanup that night, Fascia doubled twice, hit his fourth home run of the season and scored all four of Purdue’s runs in a 4-3 win vs. Xavier.

Jake Kramer closed out the win with a six-out save, retiring all six batters he faced. He retired all nine batters he faced in the series and now has nine saves on the season, tied for seventh most on the program’s single-season list. He was unscored upon in his 13 appearances at home this season, earning six saves. Seven of his nine saves have come in Big Ten play, the most by a Boilermaker since single-season record holder Ross Learnard (15) had 10 in 2018.

Jackson Bessette (3-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI, R), Flores (2-for-4, 2B, 3B, 2 R) and Manias (2-for-5, 2B, 2 R) also had multiple hits on Senior Day in their final game at Alexander Field. Bessette drove in runs in three different at-bats while extending his hit streak to 10 consecutive games at Alexander.

As Purdue’s 3 through 6 portion of the lineup, Flores, Moore, Manias and Bessette teamed up for four consecutive extra-base hits with two outs in the first inning to produce the first of four multi-run innings on the day. Flores tripled, Moore homered, and Manias and Bessette both connected for doubles. Flores and Moore also opened the third inning with consecutive doubles and Bessette delivered an RBI single to plate Moore.

Moore went deep again with a 430-foot blast in the bottom of the fifth.

The Hoosiers (21-30, 7-20 Big Ten) hit three home runs while enjoying a 7-1 scoring surge in the middle innings, emerging with a 7-6 lead after a two-out, three-run blast from Landen Fry in the top of the sixth.

The Boilermakers went back to work offensively. Boyle ignited a rally with a one-out single and aggressively went first to third on Zach Zychowski’s subsequent base hit up the middle. Boyle was out at the plate on a failed squeeze bunt, a comebacker to the mound that led to a close play at home as catcher Hogan Denny effectively blocked the plate with his foot.

But that set the stage for more two-out heroics from Rogers. After Anderson stole second while attempting to draw a throw with Zychowski at third, IU chose not to intentionally walk Rogers. Flores loomed on deck as Purdue’s RBI leader and top clutch hitter for the season. Rogers hit a full-count pitch off the outside corner to the wall in right field and made it into third base easily for the go-ahead triple.

With the rally ignited by a leadoff double from Moore, the first five Boilermakers to come to the plate in the seventh inning all put together a productive at-bat as Purdue scored three times to extend its one-run lead. Bessette’s third RBI hit of the day was a single to right field, CJ Richmond followed with an RBI ground out and Boyle beat the drawn-in infield with an RBI single through the right side.

Trevor Kester-Johnson and Kramer both entered the game after the first two batters of an inning reached base safely for IU. Both pitchers limited the Hoosiers to a single run in those innings. Kester-Johnson made his 30th appearance of the season, becoming just the fifth Boilermaker to reach that benchmark. Kramer’s 16 appearances in Big Ten play are tied for second most in team history. Both relievers are in pursuit of Andy Loomis’ team records for appearances (32 overall, 18 in Big Ten play) from 2008.

The loss and sweep eliminated Indiana from Big Ten Tournament contention. The Hoosiers had been the only team to qualify for the event every year it had been held since 2012.

The Boilermakers close out their midweek schedule Tuesday at Ball State. First pitch in Muncie is set for 3 p.m. ET.
