3rd in 4 Weeks: Wills B1G Diver of the Week Again

by Ben Turner

ROSEMONT, Ill. (PurdueSports.com) – Tyler Wills’ pair of 400-point lists in his sweep of the 3-meter and platform events at the Big Ten Triple Duals earned the Purdue sophomore his third B1G Diver of the Week award in four weeks’ time.

Wills was also recognized on Jan. 14 following his 3-meter victory and lifetime best score vs. Southern Illinois, and Jan. 28 following his platform victory and team season-best score at Indiana.

At the two-day Big Ten Triple Duals, Wills swept the diving events at a dual for the first time in his collegiate career. He won Friday on platform with a list score of 429.00, essentially matching his mark from the win at IU while coming up 1.5 points shy of his lifetime best. The following morning, he led a 1-2-3-4 finish for Purdue on 3-meter, winning with a list score of 415.40.

Wills is the first Boilermaker since Greg Duncan in the fall of 2019 to win three Big Ten Diver of the Week honors in a span of four weeks. Team record holders Steele Johnson (5 times) and David Boudia (four times) also achieved the feat. Johnson was the last Boilermaker to win three Diver of the Week awards during the spring semester portion of the season.

Purdue wrapped up its dual meet schedule at the Big Ten Triple Duals and is now preparing for the Big Ten Championships. Minnesota hosts the women’s meet Feb. 18-21 and the men’s championships is the following week (Feb. 25-28) at Wisconsin. In his debut at the Big Ten Championships last season, Wills won bronze on platform and finished 13th overall as a consolation finalist on 3-meter.

The Purdue men and women combined for 15 Big Ten weekly awards – Swimmer, Diver, Freshman – this season.
