COLUMBUS, Ohio – Evan Mackesy eclipsed a team record in the 400 individual medley that had stood for more than a decade, and Max Miller and Daryn Wright teamed up for a sweep of the springboard diving events, highlighting day 1 of the Ohio State Invitational for Purdue Swimming & Diving.
Mackesy won the B final of the 400 IM with a time of 3:43.72, eclipsing Guillermo Blanco’s record in the event (3:44.32) that had stood since the Classic @ SMU in January 2014. As a sophomore, Mackesy now owns the program’s varsity and freshman records in the event. His time Wednesday was also an NCAA Championships qualifying standard.
Jānis Dzirkalis also achieved an NCAAs qualifying standard when he led off the 200 freestyle relay with a 50 split of 19.32, eclipsing Nikola Aćin’s Purdue freshman record (19.51) in the 50 free that had stood since the 2019 Big Ten Championships. Dzirkalis also moved into third place in program history overall, eclipsing Andrew Langenfeld’s previous team record (19.34) that stood from 2009 until Aćin broke it at the 2022 Big Ten Championships (19.31).
Miller was victorious on 1-meter and Wright on 3-meter as the Purdue Divers dominated the first set of springboard diving events. Both genders produced three of the top five finishers. The men also had five of the top nine while accounting for a whopping 149 team points in the event. The women also surpassed the century mark with 115 team points.
Alex Hotta (2nd in 100 fly), Maxwell Blume (3rd in 100 breast), Caitlin Hurley (7th in 200 free), Brinly Hardy (8th in 100 fly), Keira Kask (9th in 100 fly), Lara Phipps (9th in 200 free), Jonah Lee (10th in 100 breast) and Mackesy (4th in 200 free) also posted lifetime bests that rank among the top 10 in team history. Hotta’s time (46.08) in the 100 fly was also an NCAAs qualifying standard.
In the relays, Purdue has already posted a top-10 time in team history in all three races contested for both genders.
Action continues Thursday with prelims at 9:30 a.m., diving prelims at 11:30 a.m. and finals sessions at 5:30 p.m.
