WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Cross Country’s Nate Assa earned the Boilermakers’ first weekly honor of the season when he was selected as the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, announced on Wednesday.
Assa opened his collegiate career on Aug. 29 at the Winrow Valparaiso Open and finished 11th in the 6k in 18:30.5. He was the second Purdue finisher behind Nerius White (18:19.0).
The Marblehead, Mass. native’s time was tied for 19th in the country among freshmen. He was one of seven Power Four freshmen to run sub-18:31.0 during the opening weekend.
With his debut performance, Assa joined Kiefer Bell (2023) and Douglas Buckeridge (2023) as the only Purdue freshmen to break 18:38.0 in a 6k race since 2018.
Purdue has off this weekend before heading to the Big Ten Preview, hosted by Michigan State, on Friday, Sept. 12.
