WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – On Tuesday, Purdue Baseball closes out the month of April and begins its stretch run in which the final 12 games of the regular season will be played in the state of Indiana by hosting a Notre Dame team riding an eight-game win streak.
First pitch at Alexander Field has been back an hour to 7 p.m. ET. Fans 21 and up can enjoy $3 beers and the Trading Card Tuesday giveaway at the ballpark will spotlight set five of Purdue Baseball cards.
The Boilermakers have not hosted Notre Dame since April 1997, making the Fighting Irish the fourth and final first-time visitor to Alexander this season. Last year's matchup in South Bend was the first in the series played inside the state of Indiana since April 2007.
Notre Dame has swept the Atlantic Coast Conference's West Coast newcomers Stanford (in Palo Alto) and Cal (in South Bend) each of the last two weekends. The Irish also have midweek victories vs. Valparaiso and Purdue Fort Wayne during their eight-game win streak, which is tied for fifth longest nationally entering the week. Notre Dame has improved from 16-17 to 24-17 during the surge.
Like Purdue, the Irish started the season hot and were 8-1 entering ACC play. But an 8-16 stretch followed before they caught fire here in April.
The Boilermakers did not commit an error this past weekend in the three-game series at Illinois, accomplishing the feat for the first time since the series at Michigan in May of last season. They also broke the team's single-season record for hit by pitch, doing so in just 43 games. Purdue has set a new mark in that statistic three times in the last four years.
The Boilermakers are 5-3 in midweek play this season, dropping three of their four midweek games this month. They're 9-9 at Alexander Field overall and play eight of their final 12 regular-season games at home, beginning with the five-game homestand that opens Tuesday. Purdue went 3-2 on its five-game homestand earlier this month. Northwestern is in town this weekend and a midweek home-and-home series with Ball State begins in West Lafayette next Tuesday.
