JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – Battling rainy conditions throughout the day, Jasmine Kahler and Momo Sugiyama fired rounds of 70 (-2) to lead Purdue Women's Golf in the opening round of the Briar's Creek Invitational. The two under-par rounds helped the Boilermakers record a team score of 291 (+3) to sit in third place in the 17-team field.
The tournament began one day ahead of schedule due to rain projected Sunday night and into Monday. However, the rain arrived early Sunday and limited play to 18 holes, leading to the cancellation of the second round. No. 6 Florida State (-6) led the way, holding a seven-shot lead over Kent State (+1). NC State joined Purdue in a tie for third at 3-over.
After making the turn at 2-over, Kahler caught fire on the back nine. The sophomore parred the par-5 10th before rattling off three straight birdies to put herself in red figures. With heavy rain falling, Kahler rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to card a 32 (-4) on the back side and wrap up her 2-under 70.
Sugiyama shot her eighth round of par-or-better this season. She got off to a good start with a birdie at the first before making another one at the par-5 eighth to get a stroke back from a bogey on No. 7. Sugiyama added two more birdies coming in, as a birdie at the par-3 17th pushed her to 3-under. A bogey at the last dropped Sugiyama back to 2-under, but the senior still joined Kahler for Purdue's lowest rounds of the day.
Kahler and Sugiyama are tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard, four shots back of Kent State's Isabella Goyette.
Natasha Kiel added a 75 (+3), making four birdies throughout her round. Samantha Brown's 76 (+4) also contributed to the team's score.
With rain remaining in the forecast Monday, the tournament has been shortened to 36 holes and will conclude with the final round Tuesday morning. The shotgun start will begin at 8:45 a.m. ET.
