Softball Heads to UAB for Two-Day Tournament

After a successful 4-1 weekend at the Joan Joyce Classic, Purdue heads to the campus of UAB for a two-day tournament, from Feb. 22-23, against Samford, Belmont, Southern Indiana, and host team, UAB.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.- After a successful 4-1 weekend at the Joan Joyce Classic, Purdue heads to the campus of UAB for a two-day tournament, from Feb. 22-23, against Samford, Belmont, Southern Indiana, and host team, UAB. 

The Boilermakers finished the Joan Joyce Classic with four wins, taking two victories over Dartmouth, and one apiece against NC State and Louisville. Two of the four opponents Purdue is set to take on in Birmingham, are brand new match ups for the Boilers, while Purdue has faced both Samford and Belmont before, in just five combined games.

TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE

Saturday, Feb. 22 - Purdue vs. Southern Indiana - 10:30 a.m. ET

Saturday, Feb. 22 - Purdue vs. Belmont - 3:30 p.m. ET

Sunday, Feb. 23 - Purdue vs. Samford - 10:00 a.m. ET

Sunday, Feb. 23 - Purdue at UAB - 12:30 p.m. ET

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

Southern Indiana has only played in five games so far, after its second weekend of preseason was canceled. Southern Indiana traveled to Manoa, Hawaii for its first preseason tournament, taking on Saint Louis, Santa Clara, and Hawaii. The Screaming Eagles are currently 1-4, with a lone victory over Saint Louis. Southern Indiana brings experience to the plate with 25th-year head coach, Sue Kunkle, who is set to battle with second-year head coach, Maggie Frezzotti of the Boilers.

After two weeks of preseason, the Belmont Bruins are 5-5, but took a statement 5-1 win over Arizona State during the Littlewood Classic in Tempe. The Bruins also defeated Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky, Utah Valley, and Weber State between the Buzz Classic in Atlanta and the Littlewood Classic. The Bruins have hit three home runs, scored 46 runs, and have a team batting average of .249. The squad is led by their ace in the circle, Maya Johnson.

Samford softball has a winning record of 6-3, and just had its win streak snapped at the hands of No. 17 Mississippi State on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs have defeated Central Michigan, Troy, and taken a pair of games against both UAB and Indiana State. In one of the victories over UAB, Samford put up 16 runs to defeat the Blazers 16-7. Samford will play a pair of games on Friday, Feb. 21, before having one off day, before they embark on a three-day game streak.

The host team, UAB, also has a 6-3 record, with two of its losses coming at the hands of Samford. The Blazers have defeated Northwestern State, UIC, Murray State, and Indiana State. UAB will take on Samford three times during the preseason, facing the Bulldogs at two of their preseason tournaments. The Blazers currently boast a .362 team batting average with six home runs, and a .550 slugging percentage.

SERIES HISTORY

The meetings between Purdue and both Southern Indiana and UAB, will mark the first-times in the histories of their respective programs, while the Boilers have taken on Belmont and Samford previously.

Purdue leads the series with Samford 2-1, with the latest meeting coming two years ago. The Boilers took the 3-0 shutout victory in 2023, and the 5-0 shutout in the first meeting in 2004. Against the Bruins, Purdue also leads the series 2-0, taking the first victory 16-0 back in 1998, and most recently, 10-1 in 2012.
