WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Ten Boilermakers are set to race in a combined 11 individual events plus all five relays at this week's national SCY showcase, USA Swimming's Toyota U.S. Opening Championships.

Action is set for Wednesday through Saturday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C.

Representing Purdue at the U.S. Open includes: Lance Lesage, Andy Kelly, Evan Mackesy, Walker Mattice, Dom Mazurek, Idris Muhammad, Blake Rowe, Brady Samuels, Nathaniel Thomas and Raymond Whittaker. The Boilermakers will have a member of all four of their academic classes in attendance this week, led by three seniors (Lesage, Muhammad, Samuels) and four freshmen (Mackesy, Mazurek, Mattice and Rowe).

Thomas travels to Budapest, Hungary, later this month, where he'll race for Jamaica in the 50- and 100-meter freestyle at the World Aquatics Championships (25m SCM). Olympian Matheo Mateos also qualified in the 200- and 400-meter individual medley for Paraguay.

As 2024 U.S. Olympic Team Trials qualifiers, Samuels and Mackesy headline Purdue's group in Greensboro. Mattice joined Samuels among the Boilermakers in attendance at USA Swimming's Speedo Summer Championships in Southern California to close out the long course season. Samuels was a championship finalist in the 50-meter free and 100-meter fly at the Speedo Summer Championships.

The Boilermakers competing this week opted to gear their fall semester training towards this week's U.S. Open as opposed to the Purdue Invitational (Nov. 21-23) like most years. Mattice, Mazurek, Muhammad, Samuels and Thomas were among those that raced exclusively in relays at the Purdue Invite. Conversely, Rowe's lifetime best and Purdue freshman record time in the 200 backstroke (1:43.12) elevated him into a top-10 seed for the event this week.

Samuels is a top-10 seed in the 50 and 100 free, 100 back and 100 fly. Mackesy (400 IM) and Muhammad (50 free) are likewise in their premier events.

As 18-year-olds, Mackesy, Mazurek and Rowe are all eligible for second swims in bonus finals in the evening sessions. Those will be contested after the relays.
