LAKE ELMO, Minn. – Playing just her fifth round of college golf, Samantha Brown made six birdies on her way to her first under-par round as a Boilermaker. The freshman fired a 1-under 71, besting her previous low round by four strokes, to lead Purdue Women's Golf in the second round of the ANNIKA Intercollegiate.
As a team, the Boilermakers shaved 14 strokes off their opening round to shoot 294 (+6) Tuesday. That was good enough for the sixth-best score of the day. After managing only seven birdies as a squad in the first round, Purdue made 15 birdies as a team throughout the second round. Through 36 holes, the Boilermakers ranked third in the field with 114 pars.
On moving day, Brown moved up 14 spots and into a tie for 39th at 5-over. She improved seven strokes from her first round, thanks in large part to her team-high six birdies. The Westfield, Indiana, native bounced back from a double bogey on the opening hole to play the final 17 holes 3-under par. Brown caught fire with a birdie on the par-4 15th. After a par on No. 16, she rattled off three straight birdies to get into red figures. The birdie at the first was followed by a double bogey at No. 2, but the freshman was resilient again and got through the final seven holes bogey free. She added birdies at No. 4 and then No. 9 to complete her under-par round and best performance as a Boilermaker.
Natasha Kiel carded an even-par 72 that featured four birdies, four bogeys and 10 pars. She bogeyed her first hole, the par-4 10th, before immediately getting the shot back with a birdie on No. 11. She made three more birdies to card a 33 (-3) on the opening nine. However, three bogeys over the final four holes prevented the senior from finishing the day under par.
Momo Sugiyama added a 75 (+3), recovering from a difficult start to play the final 16 holes even par. Jocelyn Bruch's 76 (+4) contributed to the team's score, as the senior ended her round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth.
The Boilermakers wrap up play at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate Wednesday morning. Purdue (+20) is paired alongside UCLA (+12) and Clemson (+14).
