LECCO, Italy – The Purdue volleyball team began its European Tour in Milan, Italy, this week, playing its first match of the trip versus the U22 Italian Federation National Team, which ended in a 3-3 draw.
The teams, originally scheduled to play twice beginning with a match yesterday, was cancelled due to excessive rain and flooded streets in and around Milan. The teams agreed to a six-set match for today to make up for the cancellation.
The competitive match included the Boilermakers taking sets one and two before the Italians stormed back for the 3-2 lead heading into the final set. Purdue closed out with a strong sixth-set performance to end the day in a 3-3 tie. Purdue tested various lineups over the course of the match, with nearly the entire roster competing during sets four and five before the Boilermakers took the sixth set in convincing fashion.
A strong defensive showing, which saw 105 team digs and 15 team blocks, was led by libero Ali Hornung's 40 digs. The senior's impressive performance included 31 digs through the first five sets, which would have set a career-high if it were a regular-season match.
In total, four Boilermakers posted 14 or more digs while four registered multiple blocks, steered by Lourdès Myers' four.
Eva Hudson paced the team's offense with 24 kills in her double-double while Myers secured a day's best .600 attack % (10-1-15). Chloe Chicoine also recorded a double-double with 12 kills, five aces.
Setter Taylor Anderson dished out 44 assists, an errorless four kills on eight attempts (.500%), three blocks, two aces and seven digs.
