Ersland Announces 2023-24 Team Awards

Purdue Wrestling head coach Tony Ersland has announced the winners of the 2023-24 team awards, featuring six different Boilermakers taking home honors.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Wrestling head coach Tony Ersland has announced the winners of the 2023-24 team awards, featuring six different Boilermakers taking home honors. Matt Ramos, Joey Blaze, and Stoney Buell all earned two awards each with Hayden Filipovich, Isaac Ruble and Greyson Clark taking one as well.

Ramos was named both the team's most Outstanding Wrestler and Most Dominant after finishing with a 28-8 record, taking down two No. 1 ranked opponents and racking up a 12-0 record in bonus point matches. He spent 19 weeks of the season ranked at No. 1 himself and became  only the second Boiler to be unanimous at the top since Intermat began their rankings in 1998.

The true-freshman Blaze was phenomenal in his first season in the old gold and black, putting up a 17-12 record and earning nine bonus point wins without surrendering one himself. His sixth place finish in his first Big Ten tournament represents just the 16th true-freshman Boilermaker to earn a spot on the conference podium. For this efforts he earned the Freshman of the Year and the Most Dedicated awards.

The final Boiler to take home two team honors is captain Stoney Buell who was given the Joe Patacsil Leadership and Strength & Conditioning awards. The Dundee, Mich., native improved tremendously in his second season in the lineup, finishing with a 17-13 record and leading the team in major decisions with five.

Another true-freshman that had a great debut season for the Boilermakers, Greyson Clark walked away with the Boiler Up Tough award after battling back from an injury to qualify for the NCAA Championships and lead the team in back points.

Hayden Filipovich and Isaac Ruble split the honors as the 2024 Most Improved wrestler. Filipovich improved his record on the season by 34% from last year while wrestling at both 184 and 285 for Ersland's team. Ruble impressed with a 13-4 record in his redshirt-freshman campaign and going 3-0 in dual competition for the Boilermakers. He also finished the year with the largest riding time advantage on the team with a +23:25 margin.
