WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Wrestling had a program record six individuals earn Scholar All-America honors from the National Wrestling Coaches Association on Friday. It is the most honorees the Boilermakers have ever had in a single year on record and pushes the total number of award winners under head coach Tony Ersland to 29.
Redshirt-junior Matt Ramos earns the honor for the third time, just the ninth Boiler to make it a trio of NWCA academic awards. Sophomore Hayden Filipovich earns a spot for himself for the second straight year while freshmen Brody Baumann, Joey Blaze, Greyson Clark, and James Rowley make their debut on the Scholar All-America list.
The four first-years amongst this year's honorees double the amount of freshman to achieve the accomplishment in program history, going from four to eight with Ramos and Filipovich previously included. In his 10 seasons at the helm, Ersland has now accounted for 29 of Purdue's 53 NWCA Scholar All-America award winners in addition to three of the four overall team honors. This year's team awards will be announced at a later date.
In total, 338 scholar-athletes from 78 institutions across the nation were recognized for their outstanding achievements in the classroom.
