Boilers Drop Conference Opener at Indiana

Purdue dropped its first Big Ten match of the season with a 2-5 loss at No. 52 Indiana on Saturday.

 

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Purdue dropped its first Big Ten match of the season with a 2-5 loss at No. 52 Indiana on Saturday.

Henrik Villanger and Juan David Velasquez clinched the Boilermaker points at No. 4 and 5. The two freshmen swapped positions to begin conference play and as a result, both players walked away with their first career wins at the new positions. 

With today's victory, four of Villanger's five singles wins have come in straight sets. Three of Velasquez's five singles wins have come in two sets.

Soham Purohit, Daniel Labrador and Mujtaba Ali-Khan put up a fight in singles play. All three matches went the distance as the trio forced a third set, ultimately coming up empty. Purohit's six-match win streak remains intact as the dual was clinched while he trailed 1-5 in the final set.

The Boilers came out clawing and scratching as they nearly toppled two of Indiana's doubles teams. Purohit/Velasquez have come within mere points of upsetting ranked opponents in the last two matches. After their match versus Boise State was abandoned, they forced a tiebreak with No. 50 Michael Andre/Ilya Tiraspolsky falling 7-6(1) in the final push.
