KANSAS CITY, Mo. – No. 4 seed Matt Ramos took care of business in his opening match on Thursday morning to move along in the championship bracket at the 2024 NCAA Wrestling Championship.
Ramos faced fellow a Big Ten Conference wrestler in No. 29 Brendan McCrone in the first round and the Buckeye gave him a good show, but the All-American emerged victorious with a 4-3 decision. Ramos started the scoring with a blast double early in the first for three and would not give up his lead the rest of the way, adding a riding time point to take the win.
The 2023 NCAA finalist will face Northern Colorado's No. 20 Stevo Poulin in the next round on Thursday night for a spot in the quarterfinals.
The four other Boilers wrestling in Kansas City dropped their opening matches and will continue fighting in the wrestlebacks on Thursday evening. True freshman Joey Blaze came mere seconds away from pulling off a first round upset over No. 10 Jared Franek of Iowa. The duo were tied 1-1 heading into the tiebreaker period, but Franek got the quicker escape to take the win by just four seconds.
The second session of action in the T-Mobile Center will get started at 7:00 p.m. ET. Matches will be broadcast live on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+. Ramos's second round matchup will be first up.
