TAMPA, Fla. – Coming down to the wire for the second time today, the Boilermaker softball squad (5-2) pulled out the victory with a 4-3 decision at USF, thanks to a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to reclaim the lead and staving off a walk-off in the bottom of the frame.
Relief pitcher freshman Jules Raymond received her first career win on her birthday, tossing 2.2 innings and one strikeout during game to move to 1-0 on the year. Meanwhile, the win was sealed with a save by fellow freshman Julia Gossett, who came in to face the go-ahead run at the plate for the final out. Gossett, coming off her first complete-game shutout earlier today vs. UIC, earned the strikeout looking to end the game.
The game-tying run was scored by Kyndall Bailey in the seventh inning when pinch hitter Ryen Ross reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on the throw to earn the RBI. Then, Purdue's game-winner came on the bat of designated player Jade Moy, who produced the sac fly to score Kiara Dillon.
Moy produced a team-leading and career-high three RBI in the outing, responsible for Purdue's two runs in the third inning when she recorded a two RBI double, scoring Moriah Polar and Kiersen George.
Purdue notched two doubles with Tyrina Jones (fourth inning) and Kyndall Bailey (seventh inning), which led to the game-tying run.
While hits were even at seven each, Purdue left seven runners stranded while USF left four.
Purdue committed no errors, while USF was charged with three.
The Boilermakers return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader on Day 2 of the Fonseca Memorial Tournament at USF. First, Purdue will take on Boston College at 1 p.m. ET, immediately followed by a showdown vs. Hofstra.
