TAMPA, Fla. – After leaving 10 runners stranded over the first five innings, the Purdue softball team scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for the 2-0 win vs. UIC. Freshman Julia Gossett earned the win in the circle, tossing the complete-game shutout in the process.
The win marked Gossett's first complete-game of her collegiate career as Purdue improves to 4-2. She struck out two batters and allowed no walks.
Despite UIC's final push in the top of the seventh, where the team registered three hits and left two runners left stranded, Purdue's fielding sealed the victory, with the outfielders making plays on all three outs, including a throw to home in time for the tag out at home.
Sage Scarmardo posted the game-winning RBI on a single that scored Khloe Banks, who advanced to third on a steal. Then, Tyrina Jones recorded the sacrifice fly to score Moriah Polar. Scarmardo went two-for-three at the plate, along with Olivia McFadden and Kiersen George, whose hits included a double.
As a team, Purdue out-hit UIC, 8-7. The Boilermakers had four runners in scoring position and allowed just one UIC runner to second base during the game.
The game was the first of five games at the Fonseca Memorial Tournament at USF. Purdue will return to action tonight at 7 p.m. ET for its first of two against host USF. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
