RIO GRANDE, P.R. -- Nels Surtani fired a 5-under par 67 and Purdue surged late in the round to finish round one at the Puerto Rico Classic in a tie for seventh.
Purdue totaled an 8-under par 280 to sit in a tie for seventh with Ohio State, nine shots behind North Florida, who shot a 17-under par 271 in round one. Tennessee, Iowa, Georgia and Oklahoma round out the top five. No. 9-ranked East Tennessee State is sixth at 9-under par 279.
Surtani bogeyed the first hole of the day, but then recorded seven birdies and one bogey the rest of the way for his 67 -- his fourth round in the 60s this season. He enters round two in a tie for fifth
Nick Dentino finished round one in a tie for 12th at 4-under par 68. Dentino was 1-under par through 14 holes, but birdied three of his last four holes for his 68, his second round in the 60s this season.
Kent Hsiao is tied for 54th at even-par, Sam Easterbrook is tied for 69th at 1-over par 73 and Herman Sekne is tied for 78th at 2-over par 74.
Round two begins Monday at 7:30 a.m. ET.
