BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Stoney Buell and Ben Vanadia pulled ranked upsets, but the Purdue Wrestling team dropped its dual on Saturday night with in-state rival Indiana 22-9.
The Boilermakers (65-7, 0-4 B1G) earned three wins on the evening with No. 1 Matt Ramos, Buell and Vanadia all picking up decision victories. Almost every match was highly competitive, seven of the 10 bouts were decided by a takedown or less. Purdue has dropped the last two duals with the Hoosiers after winning the previous 12 in a row.
The redshirt-junior Ramos started things off positively for the Boilers in his first week back as the consensus No. 1 at 125. He took an 8-6 decision over Michael Spangler to win his ninth straight overall and eighth straight in dual competition. The win pushes him to 29-9 in his career against Big Ten opposition.
At 165, Buell brought the action early in his 5-1 decision win over No. 22 Tyler Lillard. The Dundee, Mich., native got in on two shots in the first period, finishing off the second to take the lead. Good work on top to ride out the length of the third secured the victory, his third over a ranked opponent this season.
Vanadia came away with the final win of the night for the Boilers, fighting for a gutsy 6-3 decision in sudden victory over No. 33 Gabe Sollars. The momentum of the match swung back and forth throughout. Trailing 1-0 in the third, Vanadia latched on to a single for the first takedown of the bout before Sollars got a reversal to force overtime. Another single in sudden victory gave him another three and a victory in his first career OT match.
