WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Purdue women's tennis team defeated Miami (Ohio) 5-2, claiming its second win of the season.
The Boilermakers gained a quick lead against the RedHawks after earning the doubles point. The doubles team of Tara Katarina Milic/Carmen Gallardo Guevara started Purdue's path to victory with a 6-1 win over Miami's Catherine Denysiewicz-Slowek/Lauren Joyce at No. 2. Csilla Fodor/Kennedy Gibbs followed suit by defeating the RedHawk doubles team of Emilia Valentinsson/Sara Zalukar 6-3 at No. 1. At No. 3, Ashlie Wilson/Juana Larranaga were battling Nishitha Saravanan/Sarah Dev when Purdue clinched the doubles point. The unfinished score ended at 4-5.
Singles play started off with a bang when No. 113 Gallardo, Purdue's only ranked player, earned the first win for the Boilermakers against Miami's Zalukar. At No. 2, Gallardo dropped just one game, winning 6-0, 6-1. At No. 1, Fodor claimed the Boilermakers' second victory of the day at No. 1. She defeated Saravanan 6-1, 6-1.
Gibbs began strong by winning the first set 6-3. After a slow start of 0-3 in the second, she came back and won her match against Denysiewicz-Slowek 6-4. Sophomore Ashlie Wilson fought hard at No. 6 while playing Miami's Lauren Joyce, eventually falling 6-4, 6-4.
At No. 5, Milic secured her win after three sets, going 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. After a quick first set win of 6-0, Larranaga fell to Emilia Valentinsson in the third set. The Boilermakers ended the day with six wins.
