WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue wrestling head coach Tony Ersland has announced the recipients of the 2022-23 team awards, highlighted by Matt Ramos being named the Outstanding Wrestler.
Ramos certainly had an outstanding year, wrestling his way to a runner-up finish and All-America honors at the 2023 NCAA Championships and ending with a 35-5 record. His 35 wins was the most of any Big Ten wrestler at any weight. The sophomore was also given the Joe Patacsil Leadership award for his efforts leading the team on and off the mat.
Seniors Kendall Coleman and Parker Filius both took home two awards apiece. Coleman was given the Most Dominant and Strength & Conditioning honors after a 28-8 season that saw him climb as high as No. 3 in the country at 157. Filius fought his way to the national podium to become Purdue's 61st All-American and the coaching staff rewarded that persistence with the Most Dedicated and Boiler Up Tough awards.
The Boilermakers were one of the youngest teams in the country this season and two freshmen showed off their potential. Redshirt-freshman Dustin Norris put together a 14-16 record in his first year as a regular in the starting lineup, coming on strong with an impressive performance at the 2023 Big Ten Championships to finish one spot out of qualifying. He was named the Most Improved by his coaches. True-freshman Brody Baumann showed his potential with a 17-5 debut campaign including his first dual win and two open titles to earn the Freshman of the Year award.
