Indoor Campaign Begins at Lambert with Edmonds-Wilt Invite

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A home meet at Lambert Fieldhouse will begin the 2023-24 indoor season, as the Purdue track & field team hosts the Edmonds-Wilt Invitational on Saturday, December 9.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A home meet at Lambert Fieldhouse will begin the 2023-24 indoor season, as the Purdue track & field team hosts the Edmonds-Wilt Invitational on Saturday, December 9.
 
Saturday's action begins with field events at 10:30 a.m. ET, and running events get underway at 12:15 p.m. The 4x400 relay will conclude the day at 3:30 p.m. Admission is free for all fans in Lambert Fieldhouse.

Purdue will be joined by Lindenwood, Southeast Missouri State, Valparaiso and Wabash for the season-opening meet. Twenty-eight events will be contested. The Old Gold and Black will have 37 men's entries and 34 women's entries, with at least one entry in all but two events. A total of 48 Boilermakers will compete.
 
A LOOK BACK AT THE 2022-23 INDOOR TRACK & FIELD SEASON
Purdue earned one All-America honor and won five Big Ten medals to highlight the 2022-23 indoor track & field season. Johnny Vanos capped a breakout senior indoor season with an 11th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, after he won a silver medal at the Big Ten Championships with the second-best weight throw mark in school history. Justin Becker, in the 200-meter and now-sophomore Bryanna Craig in the pentathlon also were Big Ten runners-up, while now-juniors Praise Aniamaka and LJ Hill took bronze in the triple jump and long jump, respectively.
 
The Boilermakers posted 31 marks that ranked in the top 10 in school history, including two that are No. 2 all-time. Along with Vanos' weight throw mark of 22.12 meters, now-junior Brett Otterbacher ran the 600m in 1:17.52. Additionally, Craig's 4,046 points in the pentathlon is No. 4 all-time and the best in team history since 1997.
 
Academically, both the men's and women's teams were honored with USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors, eight Boilermakers were named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team individually and nine were recognized on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team. In the Big Ten, 39 were awarded with Academic All-Big Ten honors and 13 were selected as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars.
 
LAST YEAR'S EDMONDS-WILT INVITE
Purdue began the 2022-23 indoor season on December 10, 2022, at Lambert Fieldhouse with four top-10 marks in school history and 13 event victories at the Edmonds-Wilt Invitational.
 
K'Ja Talley won two events and set two top-10 times in the 60-meter hurdles, Vanos moved up to No. 4 in the record books in the weight throw and Otterbacher entered the top-10 list at No. 7 in the 500m. Additionally, Craig won two events in her collegiate debut.
 
Talley's two wins came in the 60m hurdles and the 300m, while Craig's victories were in the high jump and 800m. Hill (long jump), Otterbacher (500m), Vanos (weight throw), Connor Czajkowski (200m), Logan Sandlin (pole vault), Cierra Williams (500m) and the men's 4x400 relay also were victorious on the Boilermakers' home track.

NEXT UP: 2024 BEGINS IN CHICAGO
Following a month-long break for the holidays, the Boilermakers open the new year in Chicago at the Badgers Midwest Invitational on January 13, 2024. The third-annual meet will be held at the Track & Field Center at Gately Park and is the first of two trips to the Windy City for Purdue this season.
