WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue Wrestling saw its first action of the 2023-24 season in their annual intrasquad scrimmage Saturday night in the Boilermaker Wrestle Offs. The event held in Holloway Gymnasium included 19 matches between 25 different wrestlers with 11 of the wins coming with bonus points.
"I saw a lot of things I liked tonight, good things as we get ready to head into the season," said head coach Tony Ersland. "Need to see them wrestle with more aggression as the competition gets more intense. The guys are excited to wrestle someone besides their teammates next weekend at Clarion."
2023 NCAA runner-up Matt Ramos led off the night for the Boilermakers with a 20-4 tech fall victory in his lone match. Seven matches in all ended as tech falls with true freshman Joey Blaze and Greyson Clark each grabbing two apiece. Blaze tallied 13 takedowns between his two matches while Clark did it with back points, putting up 20 through near-falls. No. 27 Marcos Polanco and No. 29 Dustin Norris accounted for the other techs.
Redshirt-sophomore heavyweight Tristan Ruhlman picked up the first pin of the night in the first period of his match (2:23) before redshirt-freshman Kade Law added one more just 1:01 into his second bout. The final two bonus point wins came in major decisions for Trey Kruse (8-0) and James Rowley (11-1).
Freshmen Dominic Burgett, Orlando Cruz, Cooper Rider and Cole Solomey joined Blaze and Clark in donning the old gold and black for the first time as Boilermakers.
