WILMINGTON, N.C. – Momo Sugiyama fired a 2-under 70 to lead Purdue Women's Golf in the opening round of the Landfall Tradition. The Boilermakers paced the field in par-5 scoring (-5) on Friday, tallying a 294 (+6) as a team to sit 15 shots back of clubhouse leader Michigan State (-9).
Sugiyama carded her fifth round of par-or-better out of only 10 rounds so far this season, and the junior sits in a tie for ninth on the individual leaderboard. After starting on the back and making a bogey at No. 13, she recorded back-to-back birdies to get into red figures. Heading to the front side 1-under, Sugiyama birdied both par 5s on her final nine. A pair of 35s led to her 2-under 70, Purdue's best round of the day.
Natasha Kiel shot 74 (+2). Following a 39 (+3) on her opening nine, she made three birdies in a five-hole stretch to get back to even par. The Vanderbilt transfer birdied the par-5 sixth, but consecutive bogeys after that forced her to settle for an over-par round.
Kan Bunnabodee and Ashley Kozlowski contributed to the team score as each Boilermaker carded a 75 (+3). A pair of double bogeys prevented Bunnabodee from posting a lower number, while Kozlowski had an up-and-down round that featured four birdies and seven bogeys.
The Boilermakers look to climb the leaderboard on moving day, teeing off the back nine Saturday morning starting at 10:09 a.m. ET. Purdue will be paired with SMU (+4) and Nebraska (+5).
