3 Doubles Wins on Saturday

 

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Purdue wraps up day two of the Notre Dame Invitational with three wins across both rounds of doubles.

The debut match of tandem Soham Purohit/Stefan Simeunovic started with a 6-0 sweep of Western Michigan's Altman/Moriarty. In the third round of singles, both freshmen picked up their third wins of the weekend. Both rookies have gone 6-0 in solo play through the first two days of action.

Round two of doubles play produced two additional wins for the Boilermakers from teams Henkrik Villanger/Xander Ekstrand and Daniel Labrador/Juan David Velasquez. Labrador/Velasquez won in a convincing 6-3 decision while Villanger/Ekstrand had to gut out a gritty tiebreak victory. The pair of newcomers emerged victorious from a 7-6(7) result against Western Michigan's Moriarty/Altman.

Sophomore Mujtaba Ali-Khan picked up his first win of the weekend with a dominant victory in straight sets. He took ownership of each set by surrendering just one game each to his opponent Ferdinand Schlueter (Western Michigan). 

Marino Jakic also picked up his first win as a Boilermaker when he downed Deacon Thomas (Illinois) in a competitive straight-set decision. The transfer from DePaul took the first set 6-4 but had to fight for a 7-6 win to seal his victory, allowing just three points in the final game.

Purdue increased their win total to 21 through three rounds of singles and two rounds of doubles action. The Notre Dame Invitational will conclude with the fourth round of singles tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 8th.
