Purdue Edged by Penn State in 7th Inning

After a tied ballgame heading into the seventh inning, Penn State notched the game-winner to edge Purdue softball, 4-3.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.  —  After a tied ballgame heading into the seventh inning, Penn State notched the game-winner to edge Purdue softball, 4-3.  With the result, Purdue falls to 22-29, 5-16 while Penn State improves to 29-14, 10-10.

The Boilermakers posted four hits over the Big Ten's strongest bullpen, with two coming off the bat of Alex Echazarreta.

After the Nittany Lions took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first, Echazarreta blasted a two-run homer in her first at-bat, bringing home Jade Moy on the play. Then, in the second, Kiara Dillon singled up the middle to bat in Jordyn Ramos' game-tying run.

Freshman third baseman Summer Scarmardo had an impressive day, notching a tough lineout double play to close out the fourth inning. Scarmardo's defensive efforts also shined in the second inning, when with the basses loaded, dove to reach a grounder and threw a hard ball to first just in time for the third out.

Starting pitcher Alex Echazarreta (8-13) tossed 6.1 innings and three strikeouts in the loss.

Purdue will be back in action tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET vs. Penn State. The game will be streamed on B1G+ and admission to Bittinger Stadium is free.
