TULSA, Okla. - Purdue wrestling went 3-1 in the opening session at the 2023 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in the BOK Center. Wins for Matt Ramos, Parker Filius and Kendall Coleman put the veteran Boilermakers into the second round of the championship bracket.

The sophomore No. 4 seed Ramos (32-4) came into the tournament with the most wins of anyone in his weight class and he maintained that lead with a 3-2 decision over No. 29 Nico Provo of Stanford. In the first period, the Lockport native executed a slick duck into a double for a takedown that would be enough to see him into the next round.

Sixth-year senior No. 12 Filius (22-9) brought energy from the first whistle, taking an early 4-1 lead on a pair of doubles in the first period against Oregon State's No. 21 Cleveland Belton to finish with an 8-3 decision win. The Beaver had beaten Filius 3-2 in the second round of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational earlier this season and the tournament's lone qualifier from the state of Montana didn't mess around in the rematch.

157-pound senior No. 12 Kendall Coleman (28-6) followed up his teammates efforts by cruising to a 9-4 win of his own over Big Ten opponent No. 21 Andrew Clark of Rutgers. A takedown in each period put the match out of reach for Coleman to get in the win column.

Freshman No. 30 Hayden Copass (8-10) lost in a tough draw with two-time All-American No. 3 Greg Kerkvliet of Penn State, falling in the first period (0:34). He will be the first to wrestle in the second session, facing No. 33 Travis Stefanik as he looks for his first career win in the national tournament.

The second session will be broadcast on ESPN and will get underway at 6:00 p.m. CT. As is the case with every session this weekend, all the mats will be streamed live on ESPN+
