ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Redshirt-senior Kendall Coleman led the way for Purdue wrestling in session one, fighting his way into the championship semifinals of the 2023 Big Ten Wrestling Championships and earning his fourth trip to the NCAA Championships. Eight more Boilermakers are still alive in the bloodrounds of the consolation ladder heading into session two with the team sitting in a tie for 11th on 15.5 points.

His three takedowns in the match gave him 298 in his career and moved him above Eric Douglas (1994-98) for the eighth most in program history. He followed that up with a 4-2 win over No. 6 seed Will Lewan of Michigan, a rematch of Coleman's 9-5 victory over Lewan in the semifinals of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational earlier this season. The win put him into the semifinals of the B1G Championships and punched his ticket to Tulsa for his fourth NCAA Championships.
The Boilermakers also got first round wins from redshirt-sophomore Matt Ramos and sixth-year senior Parker Filius, both beating Buckeyes in their openers. The No. 3 seed Ramos picked up a big bonus point win for the team, dominating Ohio State's Andre Gonzales in an 18-1 (6:15) tech fall with three takedowns and 10 back points. He then lost in the quarters to No. 6 seed Michael DeAugustino of Northwestern 9-1.
No. 8 seed Filius pulled out a tight contest with OSU's Dylan D'Emilio, winning via 3-1 decision thanks to a clutch escape with 58 seconds of riding time against him and takedown late in the third off a wild scramble. He fell (2:08) in the quarterfinals to No. 1 seed Real Woods of Iowa.
Head coach Tony Ersland's young squad showed their toughness in the first round of the wrestlebacks with four redshirt-freshman bouncing back from first round losses to take wins in their second match in their first ever postseasons. No. 13 seeded Dustin Norris, No. 14 Jaden Reynolds, No. 13 Stoney Buell and No. 12 Ben Vanadia all picked up big wins to stay alive into session two.
