WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The conference championships spotlight shines bright on the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center this week as Purdue men's swimming & diving looks to capitalize on the opportunity to host the full Big Ten Championships for the first time since 2016.
It's back to four-day, seven-session format this season, with swimming events and diving events contested in the same facility. Purdue hosted the special co-ed Big Ten Diving Championships last year at the same time the women were racing in Minneapolis. The diving scores were also added to the men's swimming championships the following week in Columbus.
The Boilermakers have finished fourth at Big Tens three times in the last four years dating back to 2018. They also finished fourth when they hosted in 2009. The Purdue men have won at least one Big Ten title in each of the last seven seasons dating back to 2015. Those titles have come in platform diving (4), 200 breast (3) and 3-meter diving (2).
The Purdue divers have won multiple medals at every Big Tens since 2013, a streak that figures to continue with seniors Ben Bramley and Greg Duncan competing along freshman standouts Tyler Downs, Jordan Rzepka and Sam Bennett. Bramley has already joined David Colturi (2008-10) and David Boudia (2009-11) as Purdue's men's divers to medal in three consecutive seasons at Big Tens. If he can finish top three on the tower again this year, he'll be the first Purdue diver to medal in four straight years at Big Tens.
Nikola Aćin and Downs will be among the numerous Olympians competing at the Burke Aquatic Center this week. Aćin and Ryan Hrosik have helped Purdue win relay medals each of the last two years – bronze in the 200 medley in 2020 and silver in the 200 free last season. That's a feat the Boilermakers had not accomplished since 2002 and 2003; 2001 to 2003 was the last stretch of three consecutive years with medal-winning relays. A year ago Aćin also won silver with a record-breaking swim in the 100 free, becoming the first Boilermaker since 2009 to win individual and relay medals in the same year.
