CLARION, Pa. – Six champions, a first place team finish and twelve placewinners highlighted a very busy day at the Clarion Open for Purdue wrestling.
No. 10 Matt Ramos and No. 12 Parker Filius won their titles outright, while the duos of Dustin Norris and Jacob Macatangay and No. 14 Kendall Coleman and Nate Camiscioli shared their titles with each other once they reached the finals. Six more Boilermakers made the podium to give head coach Tony Ersland's team 240 team points, good for first place and 41 more than second place.
Hayden Copass earned a finals appearance and took second behind No. 32 Grady Griess of Navy. Cooper Noehre and Ben Vanadia wrestled their way into third, Brody Baumann and Tristan Ruhlman claimed fifth and Hayden Filipovich finished in sixth. The Champions Ramos, Filius and Coleman came in to the day as the No. 1 overall seeds in their respective brackets and absolutely lived up to the expectations. The redshirt-sophomore 125-pound Ramos went 5-0 with two pins and two tech fall victories before winning his finals match with Pitt's Colton Camacho in a 6-3 decision. Both of his pins came in the first period and came away with 14 takedowns and five near-falls on the day.
The 141-pound graduate-senior Filius took bonus points from all four of his wins, three major decisions and a fall, including an 18-10 win over Joshua Koderhandt of Navy. Four takedowns and two four-point near-falls in the first period for Filius gave him a commanding lead and while he was unable to finish of the tech fall the match was never in doubt as the Havre, Mont., native stormed to the title.
Redshirt-senior Kendall Coleman was equally as dominant, accumulating two majors, a tech and a pin on his way to the 157-pound finals. He was met in the finals by his teammate, true freshman Nate Camiscioli who compiled three decision victories to get there. Since matches between teammates do not count according to NCAA rules, the pair took a no-contest and instead shared the title.
Despite not getting a final match, Coleman racked up 19 takedowns to give him 233 in his career. That jumps him into the Purdue all-time career takedowns list where he now sits in 19th after passing Evan Robinson (230, 1998-2001) and Luke Welch (227, 2015-18). He is now just four shy of former teammate Max Lyon for 17th.
Sophomore Dustin Norris and freshman Jacob Macatangay both reached the final of the 133-pound bracket and similarly took a no-contest and shared the title. Norris picked up a pin in his first match before winning via decision in his next two before the finals. Macatangay made a splash in his collegiate debut, knocking off the No. 1 seed and No. 33 ranked Kurt Phipps of Bucknell in an 8-4 decision in his opener before racking up a major and two pins in his next three bouts. Up Next Purdue returns home for their first dual action of the season against Rider on November 13 at noon in Holloway Gymnasium. Results Clarion Open
