WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Running back Devin Mockobee led Purdue Football with 157 all-purpose yards as the Boilermakers kept the Old Oaken Bucket and claimed their first ever Big Ten West title in Saturday's 30-16 win over Indiana. As the team prepares to play in their conference title game for the first time in program history next weekend, the Big Ten Conference named Mockobee Co-B1G Freshman of the Week.
The walk-on Mockobee earns his second weekly award of the season on the back of a monster performance in Bloomington, rushing 15 times for 99 yards (6.6 per carry) and a touchdown while adding 58 yards through the air on a career-high five receptions. His 157 all-purpose yards paced the team, and it was the second time this season he has gone over 150+ all-purpose after putting up 206 in a win over Nebraska. He was named B1G Freshman of the Week after that outing as well.
The Boonville, Indiana, native has been sensational all year for the Boilermakers and is within striking distance of multiple Purdue freshman records. After the win over Indiana, he now holds the No. 2 spot for rushing yards and attempts by a freshman with 849 on 165 touches. He is just 26 yards and three carries shy of Markell Jones, who holds both records with 875 and 168 respectively. Mockobee is also sitting in sole possession of the fourth most rushing touchdowns by a Purdue freshman with eight on the year. The record is 10 set by Jones along with Jerod Void and Kory Sheets.
Mockobee's season has been impressive from a national perspective as well. His 78.4 rushing yards per game rank sixth amongst freshman nationwide. He also sits at seventh in yards per carry with 5.15, eighth in rushing yards and 10th in rushing touchdowns in the freshman ranks.
Mockobee will have a chance to break those records and set some more as the Boilermakers are set to take on the No. 3 Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Ticket information can be found here.
