ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophie McAfee's springboard sweep and status as the top-scoring diver at the Purdue Invitational earned the sophomore her first career Big Ten Diver of the Week award.
McAfee's team season-best score of 335.45 carried her to a 24-point victory on 3-meter. She teamed up with the Boilermakers' Daryn Wright for a 1-2 finish on 1-meter the following day. McAfee posted another 300-point list, winning with a total of 305.05.
In the process, McAfee became the first woman in the history of the Purdue Invitational to sweep the springboard events. The Boilermakers' fall invitational was held for the 10th time as a co-ed meet this month.
She capped her week with a seventh-place finish on the platform Friday as teammate Maggie Merriman completed the diving event sweep for the Purdue women. By accounting for 52 team points in the three events, McAfee was not only the top scoring female diver at the meet but also the top scorer on the Purdue women's full roster.
McAfee joins Jordan Rzepka (Diver of the Week, Oct. 19) and Maggie Love (Swimmer of the Week, Oct. 19) as Boilermakers to be recognized as weekly honorees by the Big Ten this season. Emily Bretscher was the Purdue women's last Big Ten Diver of the Week, winning the award four times during the 2019-20 season en route to earning Big Ten Diver of the Year honors.
Rzepka was nominated on the men's side this week after sweeping the men's events at the Purdue Invitational, but the award went to Indiana's Quinn Henninger for a strong showing at the Ohio State Invitational.
