WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue soccer freshman forward Kayla Budish has been named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, the conference announced on Thursday.
Budish was a unanimous selection as a forward on the All-Freshman Team. She is the first Boilermaker to be bestowed with freshman accolades since 2017 and the third since 2009. Budish is the 10th all-freshman honoree in the program's 25-year history and the third forward, along with Jessica Okoroafo in 2005 and Vanessa Ibewuike in 2009.
Purdue has earned at least one All-Big Ten accolade in three consecutive seasons, the first time the program has reached that mark since a 10-year stretch from 2001-2010. Between 2010 and 2020, the Boilermakers were honored with All-Big Ten distinctions just once before, in 2017.
Additionally, Purdue fifth-year midfielder Sydney Duarte was recognized as the team's Sportsmanship Award honoree. The award recognizes student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. They also must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
In 2022, Budish finished second on the team with four goals, 10 points and 13 shots on goal, and she tied for the team lead with 33 shots. Budish added two assists, one of them a game-winner. The forward from Brookfield, Wisconsin, started all 17 games and was fourth on the team in minutes played, second-most among forwards. In Big Ten play, Budish led the team with three goals and six points.
One of several impactful freshmen who saw considerable playing time for the Boilermakers in 2022, Budish is honored by the Big Ten for the first time in her career.
Duarte played in 83 games with 66 starts in her five-year Boilermaker career. She scored seven goals with eight assists for 22 points, and recorded one game-winning goal and two game-winning assists in nearly 5,500 minutes. In 2022 as a fifth-year midfielder, Duarte was second on the team with four assists and two goals and second with eight points. She played in all 17 games with 15 starts and was fifth with 1,122 minutes played.
A Lake Forest, California, native, Duarte is a multiple-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. She earned her nursing degree in May, 2021, and will earn a certificate in strategic communication management in December.
