WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – As an anchor on Purdue Football's offensive line, center Gus Hartwig earned a spot on the Rimington Trophy Watch List Friday morning (July 22).

Named after consensus All-American Dave Rimington, the Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in college football.

Hartwig has been tabbed Honorable Mention All-Big Ten in both of his seasons as a Boilermaker. The redshirt-sophomore started three of the team's six games in 2020, becoming the first true freshman to start on Purdue's offensive line since 2008.

With one year under his belt, Hartwig started all 13 games at center a season ago. The Zionsville, Indiana, native helped the Boilermakers go 9-4 as Purdue became one of the best passing teams in college football. Hartwig and the rest of the offensive line blocked for Purdue quarterbacks that threw for 355.4 yards per game, ranking fifth nationally. Specifically, Hartwig protected Aidan O'Connell, who claimed the starting spot during the season and completed a school-record 71.8 percent of his passes.

Hartwig and the Boilermakers kick off the 2022 season at home, hosting Penn State in a Thursday night matchup (Sept. 1). The Big Ten battle is slated to begin under the Ross-Ade Stadium lights at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
