CORALVILLE, Iowa - Rising Purdue sophomore Matt Ramos placed fourth at 57 kg at the 2022 U.S. Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, hosted at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa on Saturday and Sunday. Ramos went 2-2 over the two-day competition, his first career senior level world team trials.

Ramos opened the tournament with a 12-7 victory over No. 9 seed Aiden Reeves of the Viking Wrestling Club, rallying from an early deficit with a pair of four-point moves to earn the victory. The Boilermaker's next match would go the other way, however, as he fell to fourth-seeded Jakob Camacho of the Wolfpack Wrestling Club 11-7 in the semifinals. After trailing 3-0 at the break, Ramos scored a four-point move, and then picked up another point on a failed challenge to take a 5-3 advantage with 2:30 left in the match. Camacho scored six straight points, posting two with a minute left in the match and four at the 30-second mark to retake the lead 9-5. Ramos closed the gap with two pushouts, but gave up two more as he rallied late for the final score.

Ramos took a forfeit win to start Sunday's round, passing Timothy Levine of the New England Regional Training Center, and advanced to face No. 3 seed Zane Richards of Titan Mercury Wrestling Club for third. Richards took a 4-0 lead with a takedown and gutwrench on the edge about midway through the first. Ramos answered with a takedown of his own before the end of the first period, making it a 4-2 deficit at the break. Ramos pushed ahead with a takedown, followed by a caution-and-one call on Richards for fleeing the hold, giving Ramos a 5-4 advantage with 33 seconds left. Richards scored the decisive takedown inside the final five seconds as he got to a leg and Ramos couldn't hold him off on the edge with a leg-pass attempt.

Ramos and his Purdue teammates will return to action in the first week of June at the U20 & U23 World Team Trials, hosted at SPIRE Academy in Geneva, Ohio.
