Ramos Set for Senior World Team Trials

Rising Purdue sophomore Matt Ramos is set to compete this weekend at the 2022 U.S. Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Rising Purdue sophomore Matt Ramos is set to compete this weekend at the 2022 U.S. Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, May 21-22, at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa. Ramos will be the No. 1 seed in the 57 kg (125.7 lbs) freestyle bracket, after winning the 2022 U.S. Open in Las Vegas on April 30.
 
Ramos posted a 4-0 mark at the U.S. Open, outscoring his opponents 34-8 through the tournament, including a 9-3 victory over Anthony Moulton of Buies Creek Wrestling Club (Campbell) in the finals. Per USA Wrestling rules, the winner of the Open earns the top seed for the world team trials, heading a field of 11 wrestlers who have qualified through a variety of other events.
 
Ramos won the 2018 Cadet World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, earning the gold medal at 51 kg (112.4 lbs). He also placed seventh at the 2021 U23 U.S. Freestyle National Championships, and was third in the U20 national freestyle bracket, both coming at 57 kg.
 
He competed at 133 pounds for the Boilermakers in his inaugural collegiate season, finishing 21-10 on the season and advancing to the Round of 12 at the 2022 NCAA Championships. He placed seventh at the Big Ten Championships, and earned eighth at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
 
This weekend's finalists earn spots on the 2022 U.S. World Team, while the winner earns the right to compete at Final X on June 3 at Oklahoma State's Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The 2021 U.S. World Team member at 57 kg, Thomas Gillman, awaits the winner of the world team trials, set to compete in a best-of-three match format for the spot on the team.
 
Wrestling begins Saturday at 10 a.m. CT and will air live on FloWrestling.
