CINCINNATUS, N.Y. – Purdue alum Fernando Barco has earned a spot in the final qualifying round for the 122nd United States Open Championship after advancing out of local qualifying on Thursday at Knickerbocker Country Club in Cincinnatus, New York.

Sekne finished tied for second out of 98 golfers at 4-under par 68, to easily earn of the six available spots. He will now compete in final qualifying at a site to be determined in early June.

The 122nd U.S. Open will take place at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, from June 16 to 19. Barco joins fellow Purdue grad Brian Carlson (2018), current players Herman Sekne, Joe Weiler and Andrew Farraye and incoming freshman Benjamin Caias Boilermakers that have advanced to final qualifying, looking to punch their tickets to the U.S. Open.

Barco is trying to reach the U.S. Open for the second straight year after qualifying at Torrey Pines a year ago. In recent years, former Boilermakers Tyler Duncan (2015, 2018, 2020), Shiv Kapur (2014, 2015) and Barco (2021) have all competed in America's National Championship.

Barco graduated in 2017, helping Purdue to the NCAA National Championships in 2016 and 2017. He was a second-team All-Big Ten honoree in 2017, currently ranking 13th on the single-season stroke average list (72.66). He is ninth on the career chart (73.61) and finished his career with seven top-10 showings in 35 career events.
