CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A rally in singles came up short for the Purdue women's tennis team as it dropped its road contest at No. 50 Illinois on Friday afternoon 4-2.
Illinois jumped out in front early with the doubles points. After falling 6-1 at No. 3, the Boilermakers rebounded with a 6-2 win from Tara Milic and Rut Galindo at No. 2 against Josie Frazier and Ashley Yeah. The final point came down to No. 1 doubles, where Nathalia Wolf Gasparin and Csilla Fodor narrowly dropped a 6-3 decision to Kate Duong and Megan Heuser.
The hosts opened a 2-0 lead with a straight sets win at No. 3, before Purdue roared back into the match to tie it. Fodor cruised at the top of the order against Duong to win 6-2, 6-4, followed by a 7-5, 6-1 victory by Seira Shimizu at No. 6 to make it 2-2.
Fodor notched her 25th singles victory of the 2021-22 campaign, pulling her within one of moving into 14th in the single-season marks.
Two of the final three contests went into a third set.
Carmen Gallardo Guevara stormed back from a first-set defeat to win a second set, but the freshman fell to Yeah at No. 2, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. Rut Galindo opened with a tiebreak winner in the opening frame before falling to Kasia Treiber at No. 4, 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-1.
