DES MOINES, Iowa – Seven distance runners opened competition for the Purdue track & field team at the Drake Relays on Thursday evening in Des Moines, Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa – Seven distance runners opened competition for the Purdue track & field team at the Drake Relays on Thursday evening in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
As the Boilermakers returned to Drake Stadium after a two-year hiatus, sophomore Katelyn Wasson was fourth in the 5,000-meter unseeded event and senior Megan Slamkowski was ninth in the 10,000m.
 
Purdue is joined by some of the best teams in the country at the 112th Drake Relays that continue on Friday and conclude on Saturday.
 
Wasson was one of three Boilermaker runners in the 5,000m. She finished fourth overall in 16:58.09 and moved up four spots in the second half of the race. Fellow sophomore Caroline Jordan was 22nd with a personal-best time of 17:23.85 and freshman Lauren Bales placed 28th in 18:03.39.
 
In the team's final event of the night, Slamkowski finished ninth in the 10,000m. As she ran her first 10,000m of the season, Slamkowski posted a time of 36:30.66.
 
Purdue had two runners in the unseeded men's 5,000m. Freshman Nathan Walker was 13th in 14:21.88 in his first collegiate outdoor 5,000m. Sophomore Bryce Hutchinson placed 25th in 14:44.10.
 
The first race for the Old Gold and Black on Thursday was the 1,500m. Freshman Brady Yoder finished 21st overall in 3:50.76.
 
Action at Drake Stadium continues on Friday, with Purdue's first field event at 12:30 p.m. ET and the team's opening running event at 1 p.m. ET. Action on the track for the Boilermakers will conclude at approximately 9:40 p.m. ET. The Drake Relays conclude on Saturday, with Purdue's field events at 12:30 p.m. ET and track events at 1:38 p.m. ET. The team's final race ends at 4:30 p.m. ET.
