COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Down to a third set in the final singles match, the Purdue women's tennis team came up two games short in a 4-3 defeat at Maryland on Sunday.
Maryland took the doubles point to begin the match with 6-4 and 6-2 wins at No. 1 and 2, respectively. Seira Shimizu and Carmen Gallardo Guevara gave Purdue a chance at No. 3, as they rolled to a 6-4 win against Francesca Feodorov and Jojo Beach.
The Terrapins took a 2-0 lead, before the Boilermakers roared back into the match. Guevara downed Marta Perez Mur at No. 2 6-3, 6-4. Csilla Fodor evened the score at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-3 drubbing at No. 1 against Selma Cadar.
Fodor's win was her 28th of the year, moving her into a tie with Erica Adams (1987-88) for ninth in single-season program history.
Maryland pulled within one point of clinching with a win at No. 4, before Tara Katarina Milic stormed back to win her match at No. 3 against Minorka Miranda, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
While Milic wrapped up her match, Shimizu held off Kallista Liu at No. 6 in a second-set tiebreaker to keep the match going. All eyes turned to their third set to decide the contest. The senior opened the frame with a two-game lead, but fell in the final set, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4.
