WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – After a top-10 performance in his inaugural outdoor meet as a Boilermaker, junior Safin Wills of the Purdue track & field team has been named the Big Ten Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Wills earned his first career Big Ten Athlete of the Week honor, and it is the third for the Boilermakers this season.

In the triple jump on March 19, Wills earned a mark of 15.84 meters, which ranks No. 7 in Purdue history. He placed second in the event at the Hurricane Invitational to commence the outdoor season.

Saturday's outdoor performance comes after Wills won two medals at the Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships, silver in the triple jump and bronze in the long jump. His triple jump mark of 15.75m is No. 8 on Purdue's all-time indoor list. A native of Rock Hall, St. Andrew, Jamaica, Wills is in his first season at Purdue.

Wills is joined by senior Johnny Vanos and junior Justin Becker as Big Ten Athletes of the Week in 2021-22. Vanos and Becker were honored indoors on January 12 as the men's field and men's track athletes of the week, respectively.

The three weekly awards in 2021-22 exceed the two earned by the Boilermakers in both 2020-21 and 2019-20.

Up next, Purdue's distance runners compete at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, North Carolina from March 24-25. A preview of the meet can be found at PurdueSports.com/TrackField.
