WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team added three members to its 2022 NCAA Championship travel party Tuesday as seniors Parker Filius and Max Lyon and sophomore Gerrit Nijenhuis earned at-large bids to the national tournament. Filius earned 1-of-5 extra bids at 141 pounds, while Nijenhuis and Lyon secured 1-of-4 at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively, pushing the Boilermakers' NCAA contingent to seven.
Purdue's seven national qualifiers marks the fifth straight season that head coach Tony Ersland will take at least seven to the NCAA Championships, the longest such streak in program history. The Boilermakers advanced seven in 2018, and a program-record eight in each of the last three seasons.
Both Filius and Lyon earn their third straight trip to nationals, while Nijenhuis advances to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year. The trio joins senior Devin Schroder, juniors Kendall Coleman and Thomas Penola and freshman Matt Ramos, who each secured automatic spots in the national field.
The Big Ten received 12 at-large bids, pushing the conference total to 100 qualifiers for the national tournament. The Boilermakers tied for the most at-large bids nationally, matching Cornell with three additional NCAA qualifiers.
Purdue is 1-of-23 teams nationally to earn at least seven qualifying spots in the national tournament, and 1-of-10 teams in the Big Ten.
The full seeds and brackets will be released tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6 p.m. ET via NCAA.com.
