IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 15 Purdue wrestling team fell at top-ranked Iowa on Sunday, suffering a 36-4 dual loss at Carver Hawkeye Arena. Freshman Matt Ramos earned the lone win of the evening, while senior Parker Filius took the nation's No. 2 wrestler at 141 pounds to the brink as Purdue fell to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Ramos got up early and rolled over Iowa's Jesse Ybarra at 133 pounds, hitting a six-point move in the first period on his way to an 11-1 major decision. After an early 6-0 lead, Ramos continued to score with takedowns in the second and third, improving to 12-3 overall and 9-0 in duals this season.
Filius suffered a 7-6 defeat to No. 2 Jayden Eierman at 141 pounds, but the Hawkeye senior needed a riding-time point to eke out the win. Eierman struck first, taking a 2-1 lead after the first, but Filius responded with a second-period reversal an went to the third tied 4-4. Eierman escaped to start the third, and Filius countered with a takedown to take a 6-5 lead. The Hawkeye escaped again to tie the score and Filius ran out of time as 1:26 of riding time proved the difference.
Iowa scored bonus points in four straight matches from 149 to 174 to stretch out its lead and then closed with two decisions and a fall to finish the dual. The Hawkeyes improved to 8-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten with the win.
Purdue hosts its Big Ten dual opener on Saturday, hosting Michigan State for a 7 p.m. ET dual in Holloway Gymnasium, which will stream live on B1G+.
