LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Senior Devin Schroder became Purdue wrestling's fifth three-time placewinner at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday, posting his second career runner-up performance and leading the Boilermakers to a sixth-place team showing with 85.5 points. Schroder was one of a program record seven placewinners at the event, surpassing the previous mark of five achieved in 2004 and 2019.

Purdue amassed 85.5 team points over the two-day tournament at the Las Vegas Convention Center, marking the fourth time the Boilermakers have scored more than 80 points at CKLV (2004, 2008, 2019), and their second straight top-six finish at the historically prestigious tournament.

Schroder secured his place in the finals with a come-from-behind 8-6 win over Oregon State's Brandon Kaylor in the semifinals, rallying from a 5-1 deficit in the second period to secure his 10th win of the season. He posted two takedowns in the second period to pull within one, and then scored a takedown and a ride-out to finish the rally. In the finals Schroder was bested by second-ranked and top-seeded Patrick Glory of Princeton.

Junior Thomas Penola finished off an incredible tournament, picking up five day-two wins on his way to a third-place effort at 197 pounds. He opened Saturday with a major decision over Stanford's Nick Stemmet to secure his spot on the podium, and then continued climbing with wins over No. 8 seed Jacob Cardenas of Cornell and No. 5 seed Louis Deprez of Binghamton. Both matches came down to the wire as he needed overtime to take out Cardenas and secured a takedown in the final 30 seconds in his win over Deprez. After a medical forfeit from Michigan's Patrick Brucki, Penola squared off with top-seeded and sixth-ranked Jake Woodley of Oklahoma in the third-place match. Woodley built a 4-1 lead in the first period, but Penola recovered with a four-point move in the second period and an escape to start the third period as he picked up the 6-5 decision and his team-best 13th win of the season.

Senior Parker Filius and junior Kendall Coleman took sixth place at 141 and 157 pounds, respectively, while senior Max Lyon finished seventh at 184 pounds and freshman Matt Ramos and sophomore Gerrit Nijenhuis were eighth at 133 and 174. Senior Michael Woulfe came up just shy of the heavyweight podium, advancing to the blood round where he suffered an 8-6 loss to No. 8 seed Joe Doyle of Binghamton.

The Boilermakers are off next weekend, and return to action December 19, facing No. 13 Iowa State at Humboldt High School in Humboldt, Iowa. The north central Iowa town is home to both Purdue head coach Tony Ersland and Cyclone head coach Kevin Dresser.
