Final Brackets Opens in a new window
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The Purdue wrestling team put four individuals on the podium at the 2021 Matmen Open on Thursday, led by fifth-place finishes from seniors Parker Filius and Michael Woulfe and sophomore Gerrit Nijenhuis at 141, 174 and 285 pounds, respectively.

Filius, Woulfe and Nijenhuis all won their first two matches of the day to advance to the consolation semifinals. Filius topped Wil Gil of Franklin & Marshall, 7-2, and followed up with a 3-1 decision over We Rachal of Illinois, while Nijenhuis topped Michigan's Jaden Bullock, 7-3, to earn his spot on the 174-pound podium, and backed it up with a 3-0 decision over Penn's 21st-ranked Nick Incontrera. Woulfe needed only 1:52 to stick Brown's Lear Quinton, and used a seven-point first period to secure an 11-6 decision over No. 26 Boone McDermott of Rutgers.

All three were bumped to the fifth-place match with losses in the consolation semifinals, but rebounded with victories in their final match of the day. Filius opened the championship session with a 9-6 victory over No. 8 seed McKenzie Bell of Rider, rallying with a takedown in the second and two in the third to earn his fourth and final victory of the tournament. Nijenhuis followed with a dominant 14-3 major decision over Rutgers' Connor O'Neill, scoring five takedowns and a two-point nearfall in the win. Woulfe closed out the tournament with his second ranked win of the day, topping No. 28 Jake Slinger of Pittsburgh 8-4 in the final bout of the day.

Sophomore Cooper Noehre came up short of a spot on the podium, falling in the round of 12 to No. 3 seed Jake Keating of Virginia. Noehre went up early with a pair of first-period takedowns, but Keating reversed the Boilermaker and then scored eight unanswered points in the third to advance.

After advancing to the semifinals at 157 pounds Wednesday, junior Kendall Coleman medically forfeited out of the tournament and settled for sixth place overall. He is 9-3 overall on the season.

The Boilermakers open Big Ten duals next weekend, traveling to Nebraska and Iowa for duals at each respective school on Friday and Sunday, Jan. 7 and 9. Friday's dual at Nebraska is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT, and will air on B1G+, while the Boilermakers' match at Iowa will air on the Big Ten Network and start time is still to be announced.
