HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - The Purdue wrestling team kicked off competition at the 2021 Matmen Open on Wednesday, as junior Kendall Coleman advanced to the semifinals at 157 pounds and is one-of-six Boilermakers still alive in the tournament. While Coleman has already cemented a top-six finish, the other five Purdue wrestlers will compete in tomorrow's Round of 12 with a spot on the podium on the line.
Coleman added nine takedowns to his season total, reeling off seven in his opening 16-5 major decision over Harvard's Cael Berg, and following up with a pair in his 6-2 win over Grant Zamin. Coleman now has 45 takedowns for the season and 187 for his career, closing in on the 200-takedown mark, and stands at 9-3 on the season. He will face No. 4 seed and 28th-ranked Elijah Cleary of Pittsburgh in tomorrow morning's 157-pound semifinals.
Senior Parker Filius opened his day with an 8-0 major decision over Campbell's Chris Rivera at 141 pounds, scoring takedowns in each period and putting on a solid ride in the win. However his quarterfinal match against Penn's CJ Composto went the other way, surrendering a 9-1 major decision and falling to the consolation bracket. He'll face No. 7 seed Wil Gil of Franklin & Marshall in tomorrow's blood round.
More bonus points came at 174 pounds for the Boilermakers as sophomore Gerrit Nijenhuis posted his first collegiate technical fall in a 16-1 win over Harvard's Michael Doggett. Nijenhuis put Doggett on his back in the first and the second periods, nearly scoring the fall, and then posted a pair of third-period takedowns to seal the victory. In the quarterfinals he fell victim to a last-second takedown in an 8-6 loss to Manuel Rojas. Nijenhuis meets Jaden Bullock of Michigan in the round of 12 tomorrow for placing.
Senior heavyweight Michael Woulfe posted his team-best fifth fall of the season in the second round, sticking Princeton's eighth-seeded Jack Delgarbino at the end of the second period. Woulfe fell to top-seed Trent Hilger of Wisconsin in the quarterfinals, 11-3, and will face Lear Quinton of Brown for placing.
Sophomore Cooper Noehre took the long road back to the Round of 12 at 157 pounds, losing his opening match 2-1 to Zamin, but battling back with a pair of wins to remain alive in the bracket. He rebounded with a 7-4 decision over No. 7 seed Munktulga Zuunbayan of Northern Illinois and followed it up with a 7-6 decision over Illinois' Joseph Roberts. He will meet third-seeded Jake Keating of Virginia tomorrow for a spot on the podium.
Action is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. CT tomorrow, and will be continued to stream on Illinois Matmen's Rokfin page. Live results and brackets can be found at www.tournaflex.com.
