LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Purdue wrestling team got off to a solid start at the 2021 Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, advancing five individuals to the quarterfinals and amassing 24.0 points to sit in fourth place after the first session. Eight of the Boilermakers' 10 entries are still alive in competition and will run it back tonight, starting at 6 p.m. PT at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Senior Devin Schroder put the most team points on the board for the Old Gold and Black, posting a pair of technical falls at 125 pounds. He used the full seven minutes to earn a 17-2 victory over Oklahoma's Jack Creamer, and followed up with a first-period tech fall of Yusief Lillie of Utah Valley, 18-0 in 3:00. The No. 2 seed at the weight, Schroder will face No. 7 seed Jacob Allen of Navy in tonight's quarterfinals.
Junior Kendall Coleman put a fall on the board at 157 pounds, catching Binghamton's Logan Gumble in a first-period cradle and rolling him to his back for his first pin of the season. Coleman backed it up with an 8-2 decision over Kenny O'Neil of South Dakota State, and he'll face fifth-seeded Jacob Wright of Wyoming in the quarters.
Parker Filius, Gerrit Nijenhuis and Max Lyon all advanced with a pair of decisions at 141, 174 and 184, respectively. Filius draws No. 4 seed Grant Willits of Oregon State, Nijenhuis has No. 2 seed Ethan Smith of Ohio State and Lyon will take on third-seeded Jonathan Loew of Cornell.
Junior Thomas Penola won his first match of the day, putting on a takedown clinic in a 22-10 major decision over Nick Marcenelle of Harvard, but was bounced from the championship side of the bracket in a 3-2 decision against No. 11 seed Alan Clothier of Northern Colorado. Penola bounced back in the consolation round with an 11-3 major decision over Arick Lopez of California Baptist, scoring all 11 points in the final period.
Senior Michael Woulfe took the No. 5 seed into overtime at heavyweight, but fell 4-2 in sudden victory to Northwestern's Lucas Davison. He rebounded with a 16-0 technical fall over Sacred Heart's Nick Copley to remain alive in tonight's session.
The Boilermakers are only a half point out of third place behind Wyoming, while Ohio State and Nebraska are first and second with 32.0 and 28.5 points, respectively. A group of teams that includes Northwestern, Oregon State and Cornell sit just behind the Boilermakers as four points separate third place from 10th place. Purdue's five quarterfinalists are tied for fourth-most in the field, trailing Ohio State (8), Nebraska (7) and Oregon State (6).
