WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue swimming & diving welcomes teams from Maryland to Missouri and South Florida to Chicagoland to the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center this week for the return of the three-day, six-session Purdue Invitational.
Action is set for Thursday to Saturday with swimming prelims beginning daily at 10 a.m. Finals sessions are set for 6 p.m. Platform diving is a finals-only event Saturday at noon. Admission is free for all sessions of the meet. Fans and the general public are reminded that current Protect Purdue protocols require facial coverings for indoor settings, including all meets at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
This year's field features 14 teams representing nine universities. Louisville, Missouri State, Northwestern and McKendree join Purdue will full co-ed representation. The FIU women, Illinois State women, Navy men's swimmers and Indiana State women's divers will also be in attendance. Among the field of visiting teams, Missouri State (eight), Louisville (six) and FIU (four) have made the most appearances at the Purdue Invitational.
The Boilermakers are hosting the Purdue Invitational for the ninth time as a co-ed meet. The Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center also hosted the three-day meet in November of 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017 and 2019. It debuted as a men's only meet in November 2003. However, the 2003-04 and 2015-16 seasons marked the only other times the men were able to host the Purdue Invitational and Big Ten Championships in the same school year – as is the case this season.
This year marks the first time since 2017 that the Boilermakers will have full representation at the Purdue Invite. Two years ago, the divers opted to compete at IUPUI's House of Champions Invitational since the IU Natatorium was also slated to host the men's NCAA Championships and U.S. Olympic Team Trials in the spring of 2020.
Purdue is again teaming with Be The Match, providing fans with an opportunity to register to become a potential bone marrow donor. Be The Match will have a table set up on the mezzanine level at the finals sessions Thursday and Friday. Fans that register will be entered into a raffle to win two tickets to the Dec. 3 men's basketball game vs. Iowa. In honor of longtime basketball coach and department administrator Tom Reiter, who passed away in in January 2014 after a battle with cancer, Purdue swimming & diving has worked with Be The Match on an annual basis to help identify and register potential donors.
The Boilermakers have won the Purdue Invitational seven times – four times by the men and three times by the women. There could be as many as 36 countries represented at the meet this year.
NAVY SENIORS HONORED AS SERVICE ASSIGNMENTS ANNOUNCED ON THURSDAY
• The opening day of the Purdue Invitational on Thursday coincides with the annual service assignments announcement day at the Naval Academy. Navy's seniors in attendance at the Purdue Invite will be recognized as part of a ceremony at the pool following Thursday's prelims session. As their teammates did at the 2017 and 2019 Purdue Invitationals, Navy's seniors will stand on the bulkhead in the middle of the pool and learn their assignments in real time as the program's battalion officer announces the assignments on the pool PA system.
WELCOME BACK
• Missouri State is making its meet-record eighth appearance by a visiting team, missing only the 2003 and 2019 editions. Louisville is making its sixth appearance, sitting out only the 2015 edition over the last 15 years.
• FIU is the only visiting team to compete at each of the last four Purdue Invitationals. FIU head coach Randy Horner is a Missouri State alumnus and served as an assistant coach with the Bears for eight years, forming the link that led to FIU's addition to the Purdue Invite. The Golden Panthers have won seven consecutive Conference USA titles and finished second to Louisville in 2019.
• Northwestern is back at Purdue Invitational for the first time since the inaugural co-ed edition of the meet in 2005. The Wildcats join Indiana Ohio State (2009 and 2010) and Indiana (2017) as Big Ten teams to have full co-ed representation at the Purdue Invite since 2007.
BOILERMAKERS BACK ON CAMPUS
• Among the notable Boilermakers returning for the Purdue Invitational include All-American Caitlin Hamilton and longtime public address announcer Andy Ross.
• A Bloomington-Normal native and swimmer at Purdue from 2010 to 2013, Hamilton was hired as the head coach at Illinois State in May 2019. She broke program records in all three distance freestyle events and finished top eight in the mile when the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center served as the host of the NCAA Championships in 2010. She was also an honorable mention All-American in the 500 and 1,650 free the following year.
• The youngest of Dan and Sally Ross' three sons, Andy Ross grew up around the program and announced his first Purdue meet in 2008 at the age of 13. He swam at Southern Illinois, competing at the 2015 Purdue Invitational and graduating in 2017. He returned to his PA seat for the 2017 and 2019 editions of the meet and is back in town again this week, flying home from his new residence in New York City. Ross helped make the on-deck atmosphere at the 2017 Purdue Invitational one of the most memorable parts of a meet that also featured Olympic gold medalists Caeleb Dressel (Florida) and Lilly King (Indiana). While he lived in South Florida, Ross served as the announcer at some of FIU's home meets.
