WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue wrestling head coach Tony Ersland added a key piece to the Boilermaker family Wednesday, signing Indiana native Brody Baumann to a national letter of intent. A native of Evansville, Baumann won a 2021 Indiana high school state championship at 160 pounds for Mater Dei High School and has a solid list of national and regional performances on his resume.
"Due to the COVID waivers, several guys coming back and the overall youth of our team we had a short list of needs," said Ersland. "The great news for us is that Brody checks off all of those needs."
Baumann projects to wrestle at either 174 or 184 pounds at the collegiate level, and holds a variety of national high school rankings. He's tabbed 14th in the nation at 170 pounds by MatScouts, and is also ranked as the No. 102 overall wrestler in the Class of 2022. FloWrestling has Baumann ranked No. 12 nationally at 170 pounds.
"You want to keep the best kids from the state from going elsewhere, and we were able to do that with Brody," added Ersland. "There are a lot of things that we value about Brody. You have to find people who fit your wrestling needs and your team culture, and he does that."
Baumann intends to study business management in the Krannert School of Management at Purdue, and will enroll with the Boilermakers in the fall of 2022.
