WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team got its first action of the season Friday evening, hosting its intrasquad wrestle offs at Holloway Gymnasium. The event consisted of 15 bouts, seeing six end with bonus points, and wrapped up with a last-second takedown to close up the final match of the night.
Sophomore Trey Kruse turned in the lone fall of the evening, needing only 49 seconds to stick junior Ethan Smiley in the second bout of the evening. Seniors Devin Schroder and Parker Filius both posted technical falls as Schroder rolled up six takedowns and a pair of turns in a 20-5 win over Nate Cummings, while Filius blanked Michael Leveille 18-0, scoring two takedowns and four turns.
Junior Alec White put up an 8-0 major decision over rookie Jaden Reynolds in the first bout of the evening, and followed up with a 9-3 decision over Kruse to top the four-man tournament at 149 pounds. Junior Kendall Coleman and freshman Matt Ramos logged major decisions as well, as Coleman topped junior Brennan Doyle 16-6, while Ramos racked up an 18-6 win over first-year Christian White.
Senior Michael Woulfe closed out the evening in dramatic fashion, scoring a takedown at the buzzer to edge out freshman heavyweight Tristan Ruhlman 5-3.
The Boilermakers officially start their season next Saturday, Nov. 6, heading to the east coast for duals with Drexel and Rider.
